After your interview, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer will either grant, continue, or deny your citizenship application.
- If approved, you have been preliminarily approved for U.S. citizenship. You will be scheduled to take the Oath of Allegiance and become a U.S. citizen.
- If a decision cannot be made yet, the USCIS may request additional documents in order to help them make a decision. You should follow and respond to the requests, but you may need to consult with an attorney. If you failed the test, you may need to take it again.
- If denied for English or civics, you should practice the study materials and take the test again. If you didn’t meet other criteria of eligibility, you might be able to reapply again in the future or appeal the decision. Seek the assistance of an immigration attorney to help you appeal or reapply.
